Annie Vaughn

I empower individuals and couples to overcome personal obstacles to improve their relationships using clinically tested and evidence-based interventions. I focus on relationships first, including my relationship with you, as the client. I spend time getting to know the whole person while helping you make changes in all aspects of your life and environment.  I know that a problem in one aspect of your life can affect many if not all other aspects, having a domino effect.

No one is perfect, including me. I want to help you figure out how to make your imperfections work the best for you.

I believe in an integrated approach, so I encourage the inclusion of anyone that is connected to my client’s success within my sessions as appropriate. I started my work as a school counselor, but after a former principal and friend asked me about my long-term goals, I couldn’t escape his question, “are you sure that the school system is the right place for you?”  Apparently, the nights I spent after hours working with students and their families was a sign I wasn’t fulling utilizing my passion for couples and family work.  I took the risk of transitioning to private practice and have enjoyed every moment since.

I first started couples counseling naturally, when my dad and stepmom both started coming to me with their communication problems in college.  I was their mediator, helping them see one another’s perspective and come together. Now with the proper training (and experience), I have found the power of effective communication and its importance in any relationship.

Research shows that unhealthy relationships can cause both emotional and physical stress, whereas healthy relationships can improve overall well-being. For this reason, I offer relationship counseling, sex therapy and individual counseling for anxiety, depression and relationship issues.

Areas of Expertise:

  • ADHD-adult and youth
  • Adolescent behavior issues
  • Anxiety
  • Couples therapy
  • Depression
  • Family counseling
  • Foster care and adoption
  • Grief and Trauma

I want to show people that small changes can have a huge impact in their day-to-day functioning.

I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology from University of Georgia.  My Advanced Masters degree (Specialist) consists of a dual emphasis in both Community and School Counseling, with a specialization in Chemical Dependency from University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  I have been working with children and families in various therapeutic settings for over a decade.
